About the Course

This course focuses on understanding how to use a hand held GPS for land navigation. Emphasis is place on how the GPS relates to the map. Theory items will be enhanced with practical exercises. 

COURSE CONTENT:

Maps:
-Identify general location on map
-Use Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates to identify location
-Use Geographical coordinates to identify location

GPS:
-Understand the main features of a GPS
-Relating map coordinates with the GPS
-Using the right datum setting on the GPS
-Marking Waypoints or Landmarks
-Traveling to a waypoint or landmark using a GP

GPS Course

What you need to know:

Prerequisite:
No previous skills required; However, we recommend combining this course with the Map and Compass course to get a full understanding of land navigation

Physical Difficulty:
Walking through thick bush at times up to 1km on uneven terrain.

Included:
Instruction, GPS and supporting material. The course is taught based on the supplied GPS.

What’s not Included:
Transportation, food, parking fees, or accommodation.

Part 1: Online Module(s) – To be completed before April 23rd.
Part 2: Instructor Lead Online Session April 23rd 6:30PM to 9:30 PM
Part 3: Practical Session – Halton Hills area April 28th –  Exact location will be emailed prior to start.
