About the ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructor Course

If you have your Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) Basic Levels 1,2, 3 and 4 or Style Paddling Level 1 and 2 (or equivalent) with solid paddling skills, you qualify for taking the ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructor course. ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructors are sought after by camps, tripping companies, school boards and many other outdoor institutions.

The purpose of the ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructor Course is to provide a provincial and national certification of the competence in the instruction and administration of the ORCKA Basic Canoe Level Courses.

Safety:

-Retrieving a Swamped Canoe
-Canoe over Canoe Rescue

-Pivots

-Triangular Course in Windy Weather

What you need to know:

Prerequisite:

1) At least 16 years of age at the time of the Basic instructor course

2) Current ORCKA Member (part of course fee)

3) ORCKA Basic Level Tandem and Basic solo, Basic 1,2 and 3; equivalent certification or comparable skills and experience (with the permission of the Course Director).

4) It is strongly recommended that all Basic Instructors have, in addition to their canoeing qualifications, some qualifications in Swimming, First Aid and CPR.

Physical Difficulty:
Long days sitting and kneeling in the canoe. Participant must be comfortable in water with lifejacket.

Included:
Canoe, paddle, lifejacket, safety equipment and instruction.

What’s not Included:
Transportation, food, parking fees, or accommodation.

The Important Stuff:

Course date(s): Instructor Lead Online Session May 22nd and practical sessions May 22nd, 23rd and June 1st and 2nd 2024. Plus assignments which are due prior to May 27th.

There are two components to this course. An Instructor Lead Online Session will be held from 6:30PM to 9:30 PM. The practical session which will run 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday over the two weekends. Be prepared for a long day. 

Please note that there are pre-course assignments. We suggest you sign up no less than two weeks before the course start start date or it will be difficult for you to complete the assignments.
