ORCKA Basic Instructor Upgrade Course

About the Course

Candidates who already hold their Camp Canoeing Instructor certification (CCI) may, at the discretion of the Course Director, take a modified Basic Canoeing Instructor program. This slightly shorter course will omit components that are common to both the Camp Canoeing and Basic Canoeing Instructor levels. ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructors can teach ORCKA Basic Levels 1,2,3 and 4 (solo). This course emphasizes solo canoeing.

-Retrieving a Swamped Canoe
-Canoe over Canoe Rescue
-Reaching Assist and Throw line

Skills:
-Pivots
-Sideward Displacement
-Circles
-Reverse and Forward Straight Lines
-Landings
-Triangular Course in Windy Weather

Theory:
-Review of Theory Items
-Canoeing Heritage
-Selection and Care of Equipment
-Equipment Knowledge
-Canoe Design and Construction
-Canoeing Dynamics
-Canoeing First Aid
-Canoeing Resources

Teaching Skills:
-Preparation for Teaching
-Presentation Skills and Techniques
-Evaluation

What you need to know:

Prerequisite:
1. At least 16 years of age.
2. Current ORCKA member (membership included with the ORCKA BCI participant fee)
3. ORCKA Camp Canoeing Instructor
4. It is strongly recommended that all Basic Canoeing Instructor’s have, in addition to their canoeing qualifications, some qualification in Swimming, First Aid and CPR.

Physical Difficulty:
Long days sitting and kneeling in the canoe. Participant must be comfortable in water with lifejacket.

What’s Included:
Canoe, paddle, lifejacket, safety equipment and instruction

What’s not Included:
Transportation, food, parking fees, camp fees or accommodation.

The Important Stuff:

Course date(s): ORCKA Basic Canoe Instructor Upgrade June 1st and 2nd 2024. Plus assignments which are due prior to June 1st. 

Cost: $400

Location: Earl Rowe Provincial Park, Alliston Ontario

The practical session which will run Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Be prepared for a long day.

Please note that there are pre-course assignments. We suggest you sign up no less than two weeks before the course start start date or it will be difficult for you to complete the assignments.
