The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) has four levels of basic canoe skill certification. Level 1, 2 and 3 are tandem and level 4 is solo. These are our Tandem course offerings. If you are interested in ORCKA Basic Level 4 Solo click here.

All courses held at Earl Rowe Provincial Park near Alliston Ontario.

What you need to know:

Location:
Courses are run at Earl Rowe Provincial Park. Alliston Ontario. Note that camping is available at Earl Rowe Provincial park. Book a site at www.ontarioparks.com

Physical Difficulty:
Some fitness required. Participant must be comfortable in water with lifejacket.

Included:
Instruction and the use of a canoe, paddle, safety equipment and lifejacket.

What’s not Included:
Transportation, park fee, food and accomodation. 

ORCKA Basic Level 1 Tandem

The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) Basic Level 1 Tandem course is a four hour introductory course to learn the fundamental skill set for tandem canoeing. This is the course for those with little or no canoeing experience or for those more experienced canoers who need back to basic skill enhancement.

Prerequisite:
None

BASIC LEVEL 1 COURSE CONTENT:

Skills:
– Launching and removing canoe
– Entering and exiting canoe
– Paddling positions
– Balancing
– Pivots
– Sideward displacement
– Forward straight line
– Stopping
– Landing
– Lifts and carries

Safety:
– Retrieving a swamped canoe
– Canoe over canoe rescue
– Swimming

Theory:
– Equipment selection
– Equipment knowledge
– Equipment care
– Safe canoeing procedures

 

ORCKA Basic Level 2 Tandem

The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) Basic Level 2 Tandem course is a four hour introductory course which adds additional skills, safety and theory taught in Level 1. Combining level 1 and 2 will make a more rounded competent canoer.

Prerequisite:
ORCKA Basic Canoeing Level 1 (Tandem), equivalent certification or comparable skills and
experience (with permission of the Course Director).

BASIC LEVEL 2 COURSE CONTENT:

– Trimming
– Changing positions
– Inside and outside turns
– Inside and outside circles
– Inside and outside landings
– Reverse straight line
– Lifts and carries

Safety:
– Retrieving a swamped canoe
– Canoe over canoe rescue
– Swimming

Theory:
– Outdoor precautions
– Government regulations
– Equipment knowledge

 

ORCKA Basic Level 1 and 2 Tandem Combined

Skills:
– Launching and removing canoe
– Entering and exiting canoe
– Paddling positions

– Pivots
– Sideward displacement
– Forward straight line
– Reverse straight line

ORCKA Basic Level 3 Tandem

The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) Basic Level 3 Tandem course is a full day, eight hour, course combining all the skills, safety and theory of the Level  1 and 2 tandem courses at a more advanced level. The classic J forward stroke is perfected. Basic level 1 and 2 are prerequisites for this course. 

Prerequisite:
ORCKA Basic Canoeing Level 1 and 2 (Tandem), equivalent certification or comparable skills and
experience (with permission of the Course Director).

– Reverse straight line
– Lifts and carries
– Transporting canoe on vehicle
– Canoe tour

Safety:
– Canoe over canoe rescue
– Re-entering Canoe

– Windy weather precautions
– Environmental awareness
