The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) has four levels of basic canoe skill certification. Level 1, 2 and 3 are tandem and level 4 is solo. This course covers solo Level 4 over a one and a half day program. This is a good introductory course for those who want a fundamental skill set for solo canoeing.
COURSE CONTENT:
Safety -Review of Basic Canoeing 1-3 safety items -Swimming -Retrieving a swamped canoe -Canoe over canoe rescue -Re-entering canoe
Theory -Review of Basic Canoeing 1-3 theory -Canoeing history
Skills -Launching and removing canoe -Entering and exiting canoe -Paddling positions and trimming -Pivots -Sideward displacement -Forward and reverse straight line; stopping -Circles -Landings -Lifts and carries
What you need to know:
Prerequisite: ORCKA Basic Canoeing Level 3, or equivalent certification, comparable skills, and experience (with permission of the course instructors).
Physical Difficulty: Some fitness required. Participant must be comfortable in water with lifejacket. Long day kneeling in canoe.
Included: Instruction and the use of a canoe, paddle, lifejacket, instruction.
